SMS and MOM Supportability blog

Collegue Stefan Stranger found a new blog by Microsoft Product Support Services. This blog has been created specifically to document top support issues and resolutions for our Manageability Products. It will cover System Management Server (SMS) and Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) as well as the relevant add-ons and management packs.

A valuable posting on troubleshooting the IIS component of an SMS management point by Brent Dunsire can be found here: http://blogs.technet.com/smsandmom/archive/2006/06/19/437263.aspx

Longhorn Terminal Server: The smell of SofTricity in the morning..

During Teched 2006 in Boston Microsoft revealed that the company's new version of Terminal Service will enable client computers to run full applications such as Word with distributed processing.  Just the container application - the window - runs on the client, while the engine of the application runs through the server. Scott Fulton of Tom's Hardware guide wrote an article on the demo which you can read here

This might be the first sign of the choices microsoft made for her policy on smart application deployment. A few months ago, i learned about smart apps using Dot.NET technology. Using the technology provided by SofTricity for streaming applications, LongHorn TS gives an alternative for web based smart apps and some interesting discussions for IT architects.

Just at thought: Microsoft has almost no competitors on the outside, so now the competition starts on the inside?

Custom Patches in SMS 2003 R2 explained

With SMS 2003 R2, the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates (ITCU) makes it possible to deploy updates from ISV's or In-House developed Line of Business (LoB) applications.

ICTU consists of two components. A scanning tool  for software update compliance and a publishing tool. This tool compiles a software update catalog for the application that can be imported to SMS. The Software Update Manager (in SMS 2003) uses these catalogs to determine if the update is applicable.

Just for the record: ICTU will replace ITMU as the tool for managing and deploying  the patches and updates from Microsoft...

Microsoft announces MS Forefront branch

Microsoft announces "Forefront" as a familyname for all security-related  products. Earlier, all management related products were gathered under the "System Center" branch. Forefront will offer products for client, server and network protection. First noticeable will be the rebranding of the AntiGen anti-virus solutions for Exchange to ""Forefront for Exchange Server" (planned second half of 2006). The first malware/anti virus software for desktops called "Forefront Client Security", can be expected in Q1 of 2007.

"The Microsoft Forefront comprehensive line of business security products provides greater protection and control through integration with your existing IT infrastructure and through simplified deployment, management, and analysis."

Microsoft acquires Softricity!

What have i been doing since may the 22th?? Microsoft has the intention to acquire Softricity, the company that developed SoftGrid. SoftGrid virtualises applications so apps can run in their own contained environment on a PC, or just stream it. I've wrote an article (http://spaces.msn.com/oehoeven/blog/cns!DA5513D12D034F6E!167.entry) about the cooperation between Microsoft and SoftGrid in deploying virtual apps with SCCM.

Countering risks of Beta OS in a Production environment

With the upcoming of the new Vista and "Longhorn" based desktop and server OS'es, the internal IT departments need to gear up to be ready for those "enthousiastic" co-workers with administrative rights who stumbled over a Beta DVD of Vista and install it. Or bring in their private laptop and hook it up to the corporate network... . I've seen it happen. Remember the introduction of Windows 2000 and the impact on your trusty NT4 network when that workstation tried to force a election as browsemaster vs. the PDC?

I prefer to approach a possible hazard with CISM: Communicate - Investigate - Secure and Manage.

Communicate: Start communicating towards the users about this risk, the consequences for the organisation and for THEM. Tell them what to do if they think they need to test the new OS internally. Get support from your comms department and get backup from the management.

Investigate: Get on your phone and talk to Microsoft, through your servicemanager or whoever is a contact or liaison. You need to know what the impact will be on your environment if the Beta introduces new features on Network / AD etc.

Secure and Manage: Depending on the outcome of your investigation, you can take measures to secure (a part of) your environment by checking the current group of users with local admin rights or thighten network security for unknown PC's. Maybe increase the harwarescan interval of Systems Management to monitor new OS versions. Manage the requests from users / departments who want to test the new OS by giving them a (virtual) testarea.
