10月31日 ImageX supports your Windows XP WIM images!Since the WIM format is locked down for Vista and made available for the SMS 2003 OSDFP Update, supporting OS Image deployment is stepping up to the next level with ImageX supporting your current OSDFP images.
One of the cool things Microsoft usually shows when it's presenting the deployment and managebility of the new Vista OS, is ImageX for editing the WIM image. You could compare it with editing your *.zip or *.rar archive; Open the WIM file and integrate your new files and folders by adding them through the command line or just 'Drag-and-Drop' (I could be wrong though
This development will bring some new elements in the discussion about OS image management. In the days of Windows 9x or NT, you tried to add as possible to your image, just to preserve time 'feeding' FD's or CD's. This usually resulted in multiple images because you couldn't get it hardware-independent. And if you needed to add another version of software, you had to redo all images again. In RIS for Windows 2000 and XP, you usually tried to keep the images as 'clean' as possible and leave software distribution to your NetWare, SMS or AD GPO. With RIS and related solutions, a network share is used to supply drivers under $oem$. And still, sometimes you had to add an extra XP installation just because two low-level NIC drivers in the system32 directory with the same name conflicted during the text fase (i remember some IBM laptops...).
Now, editing your compressed images makes it possible to add new drivers for that new desktop or laptop without time consuming re-imaging. Taking in consideration that the WIM format has a formidable compression rate, it starts to make sense to add your drivers into the image in stead of using scriptology to compile it like in the current Business Desktop Deployment solution (BDD, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/desktopdeployment/bddoverview.mspx). Maybe I would also be persuaded to add standard software like Office into it (Using SMS of course, we like the registry entry for the package so it will not be pushed again) that will not suffer mayor upgrades or changes in the next half year or so.
You can use ImageX to edit your Windows XP images, as long as they are generated with the OSDFP update that came out the end of october. As i was told, the new BDD 2007 already packs ImageX as a tool. it's currently availlable through Microsoft Connect, but the public Beta will be out soon.

SMS 2003 SP3 Specs unveiledAt the Microsoft Management Update tour in Zeist, The Netherlands I had the opportunity to talk to SMS 'Sensei' Wally Mead about the development of Service Pack 3 and it's enhancements for SMS 2003.
With SP 3, SMS 2003 will offer full Vista Compatibility. The other great improvement is the integration of AssetMetrix's knowlegdge on file versions of applications. The formerly webbased tool will be integrated into SMS and semi annual updates will be provided to SA Clients.
SP 3 will also extend the SMS inventory agent to collect additional artifact data and hardware data to help determine CPU Age and USB detection. There will also be new reports to simplify software license management.
I guess that if you want to start setting up Release management, try to plan a project close after Q 1 2007. With this Service Pack, SMS will finally take it's place as the most important information for a crystal clear Enterprise
View on license and release management !! SMS 2003 SP3 in Q1 2007!Service Pack 3 for SMS 2003 will be released in the first quarter of 2007. The Service Pack will include functionality of AssetMetrix for identifing software versions from inventory data. 10月3日 Smart Procedures on Patch Management (1)ITMU is definitely a patch management solution that makes you happy. The old MBSA tool could not detect all patches and it's automatic download capabilities are a sad contrast. ITMU is shiney, happy and wonderfull. Still, Microsoft procedures about 'how-to patch in large environments' look at the technical side and do not cope with a easy and faill-save test-before-deploy menthod if you need to comply to the security bulletin the same day. Ever tried 'A-synchronous ITMU packages'?
This is the idea: After installing and running the ITMU Wizard, create a package for the testgroup and use only one DP. The test group will test the patches on application compatibility and will give their 'Okay' for deployment to your Production environment.
In stead of pushing the same package out, create a new software package that uses the same data source as the original ITMU package. Copy all settings for program and advertisement, and push this package to all DP's in your organisation. Use the advertisement of this package for deployment to a collection of your workstations or servers.
The next month you just use your ITMU wizard to load the patches for your test group. If no problems occured, you just have to update your distribution points for the second package and all is ready to go! If there are problems, the earlier patch package is still availlable for production! |
